On the silver anniversary of the film, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to JP Dutta about the film and more.

It’s been 25 years since you made a film. It’s been reported that it took you 25 years to get permission to make a film as well. Is that true?

No, I don’t need 25 years. It took me about 6 months and it was Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao who gave the permit application. I still remember him writing “All cooperation must be given (to me and my team)” and the rest as they say is history!

You claim Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn turned down the role of Dharmaveer (which Akshaye Khanna eventually wrote). Why did they do it? Is it because you told them about your character only and not the whole script or is there some other reason?

Several actors I approached had the same reason (rejected) and that was dating. And I couldn’t wait because I knew I had to start the film because it was my first film as a producer.

Will Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn meet you later and have they ever told you that they regret rejecting the script?

No, I don’t think so.

Were Sunny Deol and Suniel Shetty the original choice?

Suniel Shetty’s character, Bhairon Singh, is killed even though he is still alive. Does the real Bhairon Singh object?

Any film made based on real events needs to be dramatized to some degree. border no exception. I always make sure all green signals are taken from the heroes or their families followed by permission from the Ministry of Defence.

There are reports that initially, border lasted more than four hours. Is that true?

No, that’s not true.

How many days do you need to shoot? border?

It took a total of 75 days. Out of these 75 days, we filmed war sequences in 63 days, in the middle of the desert in winter.

Have you ever visited a movie theater to see the reaction? Can you share your experience? Also, how will viewers react to the song ‘Sandese Aate Hi’?

All I remember is the crowded cinema hall. My wife and kids were very excited and as a result, we went to several theaters (to check the reaction). I still remember the reaction when Bhairon Singh blew up the tank. People throwing money at the screen! Also, my distributors from Punjab and England told me that the cinema hall seats were broken because people jumped on them when the war was won on screen. that border for you, I guess!

There are reports that border it was also a huge hit overseas and there were long queues in the UK and Canada to buy tickets. What kind of feedback do you get from overseas audiences?

I think all over the world, it’s just the same reaction. Even today, I get the love of the audience, and it humbles me every day.

borderbox office performance is known to everyone. However, in terms of footsteps, it was seen by 3.70 crore people. This feat is difficult to achieve in this day and age. Your mind?

Importantly out of those 3.70 crore moviegoers, there were so many boys like Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Vijayant Thapar who were inspired by the film and joined the armed forces to defend our country. For filmmakers, nothing is greater. Steven Spielberg once said when he saw Lawrence Of Arabia (1962) that “It’s the magic of movies”. The same goes for border. It’s the magic of a movie.

The heartbreaking aspect connected with border was a fire at Uphaar cinema in Delhi…

It was a terrible tragedy. But it was a tragedy waiting to happen due to technical problems with the cinema. Too many lives were lost. My heart will always stand by the family’s side in their loss.

On a lighter note, have you thought about remaking it? border? If so, who do you think should be cast?
