Top Gun: Maverick’s streaming release date is reportedly up to Tom Cruise’s decision, according to Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni.

Best Weapon: MaverickThe streaming release date is reportedly up to Tom Cruise’s decision, according to Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni. Set 36 years after the events of Tony Scott’s 1986 classic film Top Weapon, the sequel to the long-awaited legacy finds naval pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell returning to the Top Gun program to train a new generation of fighter pilots. Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of the late RIO Maverick and best friend of Goose, who forces him to confront his past.

Tom Cruise is back to lead Maverick play the titular test pilot with him Top Weapon co-star Val Kilmer, who reprises his role as Iceman for a short but meaningful cameo. The rest of the ensemble cast is made up entirely of newcomers to the franchise, including Miles Teller as Rooster, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, and Monica Barbaro. Oblivion helmer Joseph Kosinski reunites with Cruise in Top Weapon sequel, directing the scenario that Mission ImpossibleChristopher McQuarrie had a hand in the craft. Since its release in theaters on May 27, Best Weapon: Maverick has been showered with praise for its stunning series of aerial scenes and deeply touching stories. On the podcast City with Matthew Belloni, Hollywood insider shared an update regarding Best Weapon: Maverickstream release date. Belloni revealed that the decision to release Top Weapon The streaming sequel does not rely on Paramount, but on Cruise, who appears to have complete control. Read what Belloni shared below:

The last thing I saw with Paramount was that the window was 120 days, but Paramount wanted to go back to Tom Cruise and negotiate a shorter window to capture a portion of the home video revenue, be it on premium video on demand, be it on their streaming service Paramount+, not specified. I know Paramount is desperate for this film to come to streaming services soon. But if it continues to hit theaters the way it’s playing, there’s really no incentive for Tom Cruise to agree to it, other than money, and he’s a big believer in the theater ecosystem and he has control of the film in his deals.

Top Gun 2 Box Office wins Tom Cruise money

If Belloni’s report is correct, Best Weapon: Maverick will likely stay in theaters exclusively for 120 days, a huge window even by pre-pandemic standards. For much of 2021 and 2022, Paramount is sticking to a 45-day theatrical window for releases like Quiet Place Part II, Jackass Forever, Sonic the Hedgehog 2and Shout. Considering that Cruise earns first-dollar grosses and has great control over his projects as a producer, it doesn’t hurt the movie stars to keep it. Best Weapon: Maverick in the cinema as long as possible.

This is not good news for those who want to see Best Weapon: Maverick streaming hits sooner rather than later, but a very welcome update for those who value a theatrical experience, as Cruise does. He and his co-stars went through a grueling program of flight training to make the film as practical and realistic as possible, avoiding CGI and the green screen at all costs. Best Weapon: Maverick is a film made specifically for the theatrical experience, so it should reap the benefits for as long as possible.
