Some of the Most Expensive Drugs Get Big Discounts at Mark Cuban’s New Pharmacy

There is a painful irony in this country when it comes to healthcare. Many of us need medication to stay healthy, but the cost can lead to more health problems. It’s like a strange “life” circle. Drug prices suck, and Tony Stark of Dallas, billionaire Mark Cuban, has had enough of it.

The owner of Mavericks has turned his latest entrepreneurial effort to cap the price of prescription drugs with something called Cost Plus Drug Co. This is an online pharmacy where anyone who needs to buy expensive drugs can get huge discounts even without insurance.

Drug prices in America have become such a big deal because there’s basically no bargaining going on between the company and … well, anyone. A 2020 editorial published by Mayo Clinic hematologist and oncologist S. Vincent Rajkumar at Blood Cancer Journal pointed out this uncontrollable price error on a number of issues, but the most important of which was “the existence of a monopoly.”

“For many new drugs, there is no other alternative,” wrote Rajkumar. “In the case of cancer, even when there are many drugs to treat a particular malignancy, there is still no real competition based on price because most cancers are incurable and each drug must be used sequentially for a particular patient. Patients will need each drug. effective at some point during the course of their disease.”

There are also no rules for American consumers to protect them from legal drug companies and dealers like Martin Shkreli when they decide to raise the cost of life-saving drugs by 5,000 percent—as he did with antiparasitic drugs. Daraprim by 2015. Drugs can also become obsolete in a short period of time which does not allow them to develop generic alternatives at more affordable prices.

There has been progress in access thanks to things like the Affordable Care Act of 2010, but even that historic law doesn’t seek to reduce healthcare costs.

“Obviously, all monopolies need to be regulated to protect citizens and therefore most developed countries are using some form of regulation to limit the launch price of new prescription drugs,” wrote Rajkumar. “Unregulated monopolies pose a huge problem.”

The Cuban online pharmacy concept launches in 2021. It’s certainly not a solution to America’s entire drug problem, but it might start to make a serious dent in competition—especially for some of the most expensive drugs on the market.

“We will do whatever it takes to make medicines affordable for patients,” Cost Plus Drug CEO Alex Oshmyansky said in a statement. “The markup on potentially lifesaving drugs that people rely on is an issue that cannot be ignored.”

We did a little digging on the available Cost Plus Drugs drug catalog and the price difference was staggering.
