Of all movies and TV shows that Marvel Studios will release over the next three years, few have the same weight among fans as Daredevil: Reborn. The highly anticipated 18-episode Disney+ series is not only named after the beloved Marvel Comics arc, but will also star Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk.
Born again has the potential to finally follow up on Marvel’s beloved three seasons Daredevil Netflix series. If that wasn’t exciting enough, a new Marvel leak claims that Cox’s Matt Murdock and D’Onofrio’s Kingpin won’t be the only well-known Netflix characters to appear on the show. Daredevil: Reborn.
Leak – In a recent tweet, the Marvel Cinematic Universe insider known as @CanWeGetToast claims fans should “expect the Punisher to show up” on Daredevil: Reborn. Notably, the leaker didn’t specify whether the character would still be played by Jon Bernthal, who personified the Punisher on Netflix.
As is always the case with MCU leaks, be sure to take this claim with a substantial grain of salt for now. Marvel hasn’t said whether a version of The Punisher — let alone Jon Bernthal’s character — will appear in Daredevil: Reborn.
Punishing Returns — This leak is in line with a number of rumors about the two Daredevil: Reborn and Echo. Cox and D’Onofrio will both appear in the latter, and it’s rumored that Hawkeye the spin-off will also set the return of Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones.
That specific rumor has led many to speculate that Daredevil: Reborn may quietly be a quasi-reunion series for some former Netflix Marvel stars. Bernthal’s performance as Frank Castle remains popular with fans, and he has long been rumored to be one of the Netflix actors interested in working with Marvel Studios again.
For that reason, it made sense for the Punisher Bernthal to appear in Daredevil: Reborn. However, the version of Castle Frank that Bernthal played Daredevil and Judge much darker than almost every other character Marvel has used in its MCU movies and TV shows.
Therefore this rumor raises some important questions about Daredevil: Reborn. Given his mental and emotional darkness, is Bernthal’s Punisher a character that can be faithfully portrayed on a Disney+ show? And if so, is the inclusion of The Punisher in Daredevil: Reborn does this mean the series is going to be as dark as Marvel comic books and Netflix fans want it?
It Backwards Analysis – No one knows right now what plans Marvel Studios might have for the many abandoned Netflix characters, including Jon Bernthal’s Punisher. The studio has so far avoided introducing any characters into the MCU that could be considered brutal as Frank Bernthal’s Castle, nor do they suggest that they plan to break that pattern any time soon.
Assuming this leak is true, that leaves us with two possibilities. Either Marvel will introduce a lighter version of The Punisher in Daredevil: Rebornwhich Bernthal might not even play, or the studio would have used the series as an excuse to end up giving away an actual Disney+ title occupying the same space as the canceled Netflix show did.
Both approaches seem possible, but we know which option fans prefer Judge and Daredevil prefer.
Daredevil: Reborn will premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024.
